We live in a world of abundance.
Of this there can be no denial! One needs to merely count the number of different cereal boxes on the shelf at the neighborhood store.
Take your television; at last count do you know how many stations there are? What about your shoe rack? Imelda Marcos would certainly feel at home!
A large clutter of objects has taken over much of our time. Inanimate objects: inanimate life! In my experience, an extraordinary preoccupation with stuff is usually an escape from dealing with the really important matters at hand.
It is all too easy to turn on the television, stare into space and push our “to do” list aside. This is not breaking news; most of us are all too familiar with this type of behavior. Our actions, however, are all the more “criminal” when we are actually running from facing ourselves!
Others have said this far more eloquently than me. George Addair said: “Everything you've ever wanted is on the other side of fear.”
Brendon Burchard in his latest book, The Motivation Manefesto, wrote:
“Why, having been endowed with the courageous heart of a lion, do we live as mice?
We must look squarely into our own tired eyes and examine why we waste so much time sniffing at every distraction, why we cower at the thought of revealing our true selves to the world, why we scurry so quickly from conflict, and why we consent to play small. We must ask why we participate so humbly in society’s frantic race, allowing our- selves into its mazes of mediocrity and settling for scraps of reward when nature has offered unlimited freedom, power, and abundance to the bold, the determined, the creative, the independent—to each of us. We must ask if our desires to feel safe and accepted are in fact enslaving us to popular opinion—and to boredom. We must ask: When will we be ready to ascend to another level of existence?”
One day, not so long ago, I noticed a major shift.
My days are less spent accumulating beautiful stuff, less hours coach surfing on the television set. More and more, I am finding myself creating, building and doing. From day to day I am building more real and meaningful relationships. My happiness and joy expand exponentially each time I step a little further from my fear and out of my comfort zone. And you? What about you?
