Why Milk?\u200e<\/h2>\n

Honestly, I never understood the connection between dairy products \u200eand the Shavuot (Pentecost\u200e) holiday. Exactly how did the celebration \u200eof the Torah (The Five Books of Moses) become a festival of milk and \u200ehoney? Out of curiosity I began to surf the web in an effort to get \u200esome answers. I found many interesting and creative answers among \u200ethem I discovered:\u200e<\/p>\n

\u2666 The Torah was delivered on Mt Sinai or \u201cHar Gav'nunim\u201d, the \u200emountain of majestic peaks. In Hebrew \u201cgevina\u201d is cheese.\u200e
\n\u2666 The numerology calculation for \u201chalav\u201d (the Hebrew word for \u200emilk) is 40: the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years.\u200e
\n\u2666 White represents purity: the Israelites were obligated to purify \u200ethemselves in preparation for the holy gift of the Torah.\u200e<\/p>\n

It is clear that milk and all dairy products have become the symbols of \u200eShavuot.\u200e<\/strong><\/p>\n

Just before the holiday began I went into the shopping center and was \u200eaccosted by an army of Tnuva<\/a> (the major producer of Israeli dairy \u200eproducts) sales reps on their way to hand out free samples, recipes \u200eand coupons to the crowd of shoppers on the lookout for new ways to \u200edress up their holiday tables.\u200e<\/p>\n

I visited Tnuva\u2019s website and discovered a special page dedicated to \u200ethe holiday festivities. I was blown away by its beauty and the \u200eabundant creativity. Even if you cannot understand Hebrew, you \u200emight want to take a look. You\u2019ll find baking consultants, recipes, \u200ecoupons, tips, a \u201cGrandmothers\u2019 Baking Contest\u201d and if despite all of \u200eyour best efforts your cheesecake was not a success, you may just get \u200ea special delivery replacement directly from Tnuva! An ingenious \u200emarketing effort indeed! \u200e<\/p>\n

Despite all of the savory preparations for the holiday, \u200e
\nthere is a foul taste in the air…<\/h2>\n

Symbols are dear to us, full of associations and \u200ememories but we mustn't hold on to them at any cost. It is the \u200eessence of the holiday which we need to remember.\u200e<\/p>\n

\"SHAVUOT\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Shavuot, the Feast of Deliverance, celebrates the gift of the Torah. The \u200e\u200e10 Commandments are mentioned in two different books of the \u200eTorah, so important were they that they were mentioned twice. These \u200ecommandments represent moral codes of ethics, behavior and \u200ecommitment. Are the symbols we have adopted reflective of these \u200ecodes?\u200e<\/p>\n

One of the codes which I have adopted for myself is: honor thy body; \u200ethou shalt deliver abundant good and nutritious energies in earnest. \u200e<\/p>\n

All that glitters is not gold.\u00a0All that is white is not pure.\u200e<\/h2>\n

Provocative packaging calls out: look here, taste me, buy me! We are \u200eblinded by the beautiful lies<\/a> we are sold. It is \u201cmerely\u201d our health that \u200eis being compromised<\/a>\u2026\u200e<\/p>\n

I don\u2019t want to sell you anything. I have no desire neither to be the \u200etown crier nor the prophet of doom. Preach? No, not me. Most of the \u200eTen Commandments are packaged in thou \u201cshall nots\u201d. I prefer the \u200eaffirmative over the negative.\u200e<\/p>\n

Be committed to your health. Look beyond the limelight, read the fine \u200eprint and ask the right questions.\u200e<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve been cheezing away\u2026 I prepared a special cheese for a vegan \u200echeese competition<\/a> (wish me luck) and last night we licked our lips \u200eover a succulent chocolate coated cheesecake with strawberries. \u200eYummy! I always was the cheesecake girl. Isn\u2019t it wonderful that there \u200eis no need to deprive myself of my favorite treats?!<\/p>\n
