Into this world we make our entrance unencumbered and free with a \u200ehealthy measure of curiosity and a natural sense of adventure.\u200e<\/p>\n

\n

A young girl, much like all children, is hard at play, running, skipping, \u200ejumping and dancing. Precious glee is woven into every moment as \u200eshe adventures to explore and taste. Every object in her path arouses \u200eher curiosity.<\/p>\n

Her essence is joy, each move authentic and true.<\/h3>\n

She \u200ebounces on her bed free of any costume or dress,\u00a0all of the \u201cwhat if\u2019s\u201d \u200ecompletely foreign to her being. She sprints up to the top of the \u200emountain of sand near her home only to dance down again and again. \u200eShe is fearless.<\/p>\n

With her every move she reigns as \u201cQueen of the \u200eLand\u201d.<\/h3>\n

Into the kitchen she enters with gusto. Today is the day that \u200eshe designs her signature cake. With a little bit of this and a little bit of \u200ethat and no script, written or otherwise, to guide her, she composes. \u200eUnburdened with fears and\u00a0handicaps, she moves with determination \u200eand delight.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similarly, she turns her creative forces to fashion. Armed \u200ewith but fabric, thread and tenacity she tailors her way. Off she races \u200eto show her friend. She unravels as she goes but that is of little \u200econcern to her\u2026\u200e<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Wee Warriors Were We\u200e<\/h2>\n

But were we?\u200e<\/strong><\/p>\n

It was not that we had the courage to dare; \u200e
\nWe simply knew no fear.\u200e<\/h3>\n

Year by year and bit by bit, we built up our protective shield. Fast \u200eforward many years and many layers later, it is challenging at the \u200eleast, to reach deep to our true self. We are cautious to venture out \u200eand stick close to our rigid shadow.\u200e<\/p>\n

What Happened?\u200e<\/h3>\n

Rosh Hashana, a new year, is upon us. Shana Tova, Happy New Year! \u200eAccording to tradition, the approach of the new year is a time for self-\u200eintrospection and repentance. More often than not, our thoughts and \u200eintrospection center stage all of our trials and tribulations: where did \u200ewe go wrong and where can we do better?\u200e
\nSimilarly, at Christmastime the radio sings: \u201cYou better be good \u2026 \u200eSanta Claus is coming to town!\u201d \u200e<\/p>\n

Perhaps now is a great time to spice up our ancient traditions and stop \u200ebeating ourselves up over all of our mess-ups, failures and oversights. \u200eEnough bemoaning! For once let it not be about what we did wrong \u200ebut rather a celebration of what we did right! For a moment, let us \u200egive gratitude in honor of every victorious moment, small and large. \u200e<\/p>\n

Pay homage to the warrior within. \u200e
\nHurrah for the courage to dare!\u200e<\/h3>\n

In the looking glass, I always saw a timid reflection of self even \u200ethough, of late, my self-reflection has become more in alignment with \u200emy innate warrior. In preparation for this post, I endeavored to fill a \u200etimeline with my warrior\u2019s triumphant moments. So abundant were \u200ethese that I needed to insert extra rows along the way, again and \u200eagain. Suddenly, I was astounded to discover that my warrior had \u200enever abandoned me and had been there all along. \u200e<\/p>\n

I exploited this week\u2019s bike ride to accost my fellow bikers. I asked \u200ethem a simple question:\u200e<\/p>\n

\u200e\u201cOf all of your memories, \u200e
\nOf all the things which you found the courage to dare to do, \u200e
\nWhich brings you the greatest source of pride?\u201d\u200e<\/h3>\n

I was totally unprepared for the discomfort of the tongue tied bikers \u200eand the almost complete loss of words which followed. Was the \u200esource of this unease just embarrassment or simply the inability to \u200efind the right words? It was not clear to me. \u200e<\/p>\n

Here are some of their brags. \u200e
\nNotice, if you will, how many are centered on family:\u200e
\n\u200e<\/strong><\/p>\n

Getting married.\u200e
\nMarrying XXXX.\u200e
\nMy son.\u200e
\nGoing back to school at 37.\u200e
\nToday\u2019s bike ride.\u200e
\nSuccessfully appealing the university\u2019s decision not to accept me.\u200e
\nGetting back on a bike after serious injury.\u200e
\nCompleting the Annapurna Trek in Nepal.\u200e<\/p>\n

Here are some of mine:\u200e<\/strong><\/p>\n

Confronting my teacher regarding his stereotyped rhetoric.\u200e
\nRequesting a permission slip to escape the morning prayer at school.\u200e
\nCelebrating my bat mitzvah untraditionally.\u200e<\/p>\n

Wearing a full tux and tails to my school prom.\u200e<\/p>\n

\"grad<\/a><\/p>\n

Making Aliyah as a \u201clone\u201d soldier.\u200e
\nGetting married at the rabbinical office with a bare \u201cminyan\u201d without \u200emy parents at 19.\u200e
\nManaging the dairy as I was left alone in the First Lebanon War.\u200e
\nAt the request of my hairdresser, agreeing to transition from a long to \u200ea cropped haircut.\u200e
\nLeaving the kibbutz at 35 with three children in tow.\u200e
\nCelebrating our children\u2019s bar\/bat mitzvahs in a unique and \u200emeaningful manor.\u200e<\/p>\n

Dying my hair platinum blond (even though it was short lived).\u200e
\nAgreeing to bike with cleats or more precisely, allowing myself to fall \u200ewhile still hooked up\u2026\u200e
\nBiking downhill at Whistler at 40+.\u200e<\/p>\n

\"hardcore\"<\/a>
\nDeciding to not color my hair any more.\u200e
\nBeginning to teach dance at 50 something.\u200e
\nJoining a Spencer Tunic photo installation at the Dead Sea.\u200e
\nLeaving my job of 20 something years.\u200e
\nSpeaking up.\u200e<\/p>\n

Go for it!\u200e<\/h3>\n
