Becoming the Light

Should I or shouldn’t I?

A man approached inquiring if I was last on line. Moments later another shopper tried to claim his spot. I smiled warmly at his uncharacteristically warm and polite reply. As I waited for the cashier, I eyed the content of his shopping cart and the cartons of diet soda therein.

Should I or shouldn’t I?

“Please excuse my chutzpa, but would it be ok if I speak my mind?”

I am pretty sure that I did not wait for his reply… I let him know that choosing “diet” was not a vote for better health; fake sugar would send his body mixed signals, disrupt his gut health and create hormonal imbalance. In no uncertain terms I let him know that I was against all soft drinks, while urging him that if he felt the need to drink cola, then he was better off drinking the original, regular, non-diet version.

Mother nature’s agenda erupted into a spontaneous surge of hormonal activity: nurturing, bonding. I felt connected, sharing from my heart, sensing that I had his genuine attention. Chances are good that our brief conversation will have lasting impact on his health.

In the beginning I was a snail

My space was private: speaking my mind to strangers was inconceivable. Heck, even greeting a familiar face could be a struggle.  Today’s encounter? Not a big deal. How very strange …

India Arie – Break the Shell

Break the Shell by India Arie. Album: Songversation Lyrics are on the screen. Have a beautiful day! 🙂

Suddenly I find myself treading on novel ground. A little over a year ago I joined Women Wage Peace (a women’s grassroots indicative for peace between Palestinians and Israelis). My mission was to organize a bus from my home town to the upcoming Woman Wage Peace march and rally in Jerusalem. Aghast, realizing that I was expected to open the local phone directory, call number by number and speak to family by family, I panicked. Way out of my comfort zone, I searched for a graceful exit.

Such was the way I began marching. I traded my phone duties to become one of the twenty core marchers. From Rosh Hanikra to Jerusalem we pressed on and lead the 2016 two-week March of Hope. I knew not a soul when we began, imagine that?! Growing up with three brothers engulfed by hockey pucks, dirty socks and worn out shoes, abracadabra, suddenly I was blessed with twenty soul sisters.

Hand in hand, together we walked the land of our foremothers, Sarah and Hagar. We walked on the beach, in the fields, up the mountains and by the roadside. We and thousands of others cried out for peace and sang the Prayer of the Mothers. We met with Muslims, Jews, Christians and Druzes from all walks of life. Curiosity, enthusiasm and dialog opened doors. The walls of self-design began to tumble. Hope became more than a fancy buzzword.

An easy and intimate sense of camaraderie thrived: twenty strong, an alluring force to be reckoned with. This passion for peace, connection and joy continues to burn strong.

A Good Life

What makes a good life? Remarkably, it’s not about kale, career, contacts or K’s in the bank but rather the strength of our relationships, so says the 75-year-old Harvard’s Grant and Glueck study. Our health and our happiness, our physical and emotional wellbeing are interdependent on the strength of our closest relationships. When we are connected at the heart we are happier and ultimately healthier. No kidding, for real.

Robert Waldinger: What makes a good life? Lessons from the longest study on happiness

What keeps us happy and healthy as we go through life? If you think it’s fame and money, you’re not alone – but, according to psychiatrist Robert Waldinger, you’re mistaken. As the director of a 75-year-old study on adult development, Waldinger has unprecedented access to data on true happiness and satisfaction.

Journey to Peace

September 2017, we began marching again, Journey(ing) to Peace. Our numbers grew stronger, our aspirations loftier. We marched in the heat of the desert, visiting development towns and villages, marching less but creating massive dialog which continues passionately in our wake. We were encouraged by the support we met along the way; deeply inspired by women of all creeds and colors and the depth of their initiatives to build themselves up from nothing, erecting meaningful monuments of change throughout the land.

I found myself connecting with random women marching next to me. Where mutual words were lacking, I embraced a body language of abundant laughter, gestures and embraces.

Step Into My Web

It is fair to say that my snail’s shell has been tossed aside. These days I see myself as a spider. My open arms (many to go around) wide, embracing life and love against an ever-present web of joy which follows in my shadow.

Becoming the Light

At Hannukah we sing a simple children’s song:

With fire in our hands we have come to chase away the darkness. Each of us has a small light but together we are a powerful light. Away with darkness – here comes the light.

“When we stand together we’ll become the light.” ~ Yael Deckelbaum

?If all want peace, why aren’t we talking peace
?If all seek vibrant health, why are our shopping carts full of rubbish
!?Why, for heaven’s sake, do we sit idly by waiting for others to fix what’s broken

What modest change you can add into your routine to bring you one step closer to vibrant health? Can you switch out diet soda for water?

What can you do to make this world a better place? What is important enough to you to get up and march for a better future?
